We welcome all new skaters to our local Clubs, to learn the fundamentals of speed skating, safety and proper body technique. We focus on age appropriate skills development on a foundation of fun, respect and support.  The Northwestel Learn to Speed Skate Program is aimed at skaters who have basic skating skills but want to learn the sport of short track speed skating.  We teach the fundamental movements, introduce core stability, agility, balance and coordination while developing a positive attitude to sport. The program also introduces the skaters to the basic equipment and skills required for competitive advancement. Big thank you to our program sponsor Northwestel!

In Levels 1 to 5, skills development includes:
  • Moving forward and backwards
  • Stopping
  • Cross overs
  • Edge control
  • Basic position starts
and much more!

Skaters may use figure or hockey skates in levels 1 to 3, but it is recommended that they transition to long blades by Level 3.  Skaters may use their own CSA approved helmet or purchase a speed skating helmet along with some mandatory safety equipment from the ISSC.  Skin suit and long blades for these levels can be rented at $50 per season.

We recommend that all Level 1 to 5 skaters participate in all Club Fun Meets.
