John Maurice
The NSSA and its local clubs have been instrumental in providing youth opportunities for health and wellness, athletic development, participation at local, regional, circumpolar and national competitions for speed skating.
Under the direction of John Maurice, former teacher in Iqaluit, the sport continues to grow since its inception in 1999. While now retired from the weekly practices, he continues to attend meets and AGMs and provide corporate memory, mentorship to the Board of Directors, parent volunteers, public advocacy for recruitment and encouragement to our skaters.
His contributions to the club and legacy of speed skating in Nunavut was recognized at the 2017-18 NSSA Awards Gala in May 2018, in Iqaluit, NU.
Nakurmiik, thank you, merci John!

Committees
Fundraising Committee
To assist us in supporting our annual activities, our clubs engage in a range of government grant proposal writing, community activities such as bingos, 50/50 draws and corporate donation solicitation. Our Directors-at-Large and parents lead these activities to meet our annual strategic goals, club and player development. Interested in assisting our fundraising efforts? Contact Sherri at speedskatingnu@gmail.com |
Meet Committee
Coordinating sanctioned territorial meets, fun-meets and competitive travel opportunities, our coaches and parents arrange for logistical coordination, coaching development, officials travel and overall calendar of events. From weekend or evening mat set-up/take-down to time keeping, join us to give our youth the opportunities to learn and grow! Can you lend a hand for meets? Contact Martine at speedskatingnu@gmail.com |
Our Local Clubs
Nunavut has the distinct challenge in that all of our communities are completely fly-in! There are no roads connecting our cities and hamlets to each other - or our southern provinces or western territories - so development is costly to foster other clubs. In years past we had active clubs in Cambridge Bay (Kitikmeot region), Pangnirtung (South Qikiqtaaluk region) and Pond Inlet (North Qikiqtaaluk region), but we rely on knowledgeable former skaters and access to functioning arenas and ice time to develop and sustain our clubs.

Iqaluit Speed Skating Club - Arctic Terns
In 2018, our Iqaluit club, the Arctic Terns, was our most active - and were we ever!
We had 15 boys and young men and 28 girls and young women in our beginner, developmental and advanced/competitive programs, and 5 adult leaders/coaches. The ISSC brought home the most medals for Nunavut in the 2018 Arctic Winter Games, and we have several athletes who qualified to compete at the 2019 Canada Games! In 2020, our dreams were dashed to compete at the Whitehorse Arctic Winter Games due to the global pandemic.
The ISSC is made possible through the hard work and leadership of parents like you, who volunteer countless hours to both the NSSA Board of Directors and ongoing fundraising, on-ice and dry land practices for all skating levels, and ongoing coaching and sanctioned meet delivery.
If you have an interest in the sport, and would like to learn more about registering your child, contact one of our ISSC representatives. The ISSC has made the difference in the lives of many youth since it's inception in the mid-1990's, providing a healthy environment, skills development, character and team building, and a strong community and family bond that grows not just strong athletes, but strong people.

Cambridge Bay Blades Club
In 2019-20, the Cambridge Bay Blades got back on the ice after a delay due to the unavailability of the local arena. This Club provides a Learn-to-Skate opportunity for new skaters once a week through the leadership of Ruth Roberts. In 2019-20, through territorial funding, we were able to host a developmental skater from the Blades Club during the Nagano Skate Camp. This provided an exceptional opportunity for skills development, equipment, nutrition and technique education, and connection to the broader community of Nunavut skaters. The NSSA continues to support the Club in their growth and development, including Coaching development opportunities.
For more information on this Club and their activities contact the Coaching lead directly. |
